Die Maske der Bösen
Composer Steve Crowther, poet Bertolt Brecht
On my wall hangs a Japanese wooden
Mask of an evil demon painted in gold.
With feelings I see
The swollen veins, on reflection I think
How strenuous it is, to be evil.
In this poem, Brecht reflects on a Japanese mask which is hanging on his wall. Observing a face with protruding veins and, presumably, a creepy persona, he muses how difficult it must be to be evil!
