Closer than Ever
Composer Chris Warner
Founded in 1945, the Doomsday Clock uses apocalyptic and contemporary idioms of countdowns to midnight (apocalypse) and zero (nuclear explosion) to convey threats to humanity and the planet. On 23rd January 2020 this Clock was shifted forwards to 100 seconds before midnight: the closest it’s ever been. The pianist speaks a countdown from 17 minutes (the furthest the Clock has been). The soprano conjoins the pianist’s distances to their matching years, using melodic cells numerically derived from the years themselves. The metronome marks out a portentous 100 seconds.
